Often, the traditional typology is at its best surrounded by the east coast’s rolling hills and sand dunes. However, despite its prominent position on a corner lot, this west coast residence was severely constrained by tight zoning and lot parameters, which threatened both the space and the creativity of the design.

The front elevation is defined by two primary gabled volumes, which are punctuated by carefully calibrated bay windows, balconies, chimneys and a secondary roof structure. The materiality of the exterior is defined by cedar shingles coated in a transparent stain, which animate the facade to respond to every nuance of light. The first floor sits a few feet below the sidewalk, allowing the home to benefit from the beauty and privacy of a terraced front garden.

While the front facade emphasizes classic symmetry, the interior tells a more youthful story, combining elegant detailing with moments of vibrant personality. With such tight constraints, the design team sought to create an inner world of grounded sophistication and warmth. Upon entry, the double height vestibule is anchored by a custom skylight and a checkered marble floor below. Meticulous wood paneling stitches every surface together, creating a pattern of panels and highlights. Below ground, a full basement conceals a mahogany rich wood paneled office and trophy room, which lies adjacent to a game room, wine cellar, and entertainment lounge.

The true showpiece of the architecture, however, is found at the heart of the home. A 36’ covered outdoor dining room sits on the second story and is connected to the backyard pool deck below by a double-height limestone fireplace. Elaborating on the classic east coast “sunroom”, this expansive deck is where gatherings gravitate in all weather conditions and for all occasions.
